We never get tired of seeing Lotto athletes competing on the big stage.
Especially when that stage is as big as the French Open!
Also called the Roland-Garros, the French Open is a premier tennis tournament that takes place in late May every year over the span of two weeks. It’s the only Grand Slam tournament held on a clay court, and has been going strong since 1891—over 130 years!
This year featured some strong competition—however, we’re happy to announce that the finals were fought between two teams with Lotto athletes on either side!
Krajicek Defeats Vliegen and Gillé
After advancing to the finals, Austin Krajicek, with his partner Ivan Dodig, defeated the all-Lotto team of Joran Vliegen and Sander Gillé in a thrilling match to take him doubles gold at the French Open! The first set was 6-3, and the second was 6-1.
Krajicek advanced through the tournament, winning a hard-fought battle against the team of Tim Pütz and Kevin Krawietz in the quarter finals that took three sets—one of which needed a tiebreaker. Together with Dodig, he then defeated the team of Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos in the semi-finals, once again needing a tiebreaker to win the second set.
Vliegen and Gillé took a similar path—they first bested González and Molteni in the quarter finals in two sets with a tiebreaker in the second set. In the semi-finals, the team defeated Andreas Mies and Matwé Middelkoop with sets of 6-4 and 7-5.
Watching our athletes battle in the finals makes us more proud than ever—a huge congratulations goes out to Austin Krajicek for his thrilling win in the tournament, and we look forward to more incredible feats in his career!
